These engines were replaced with large coal burners pulling long trains of large box cars. These were replaced a few years ago with present day diesels that pull very long trains. Southern Railroad bought the Central in 1963. They have just completed an ultra-modern switch yard west of Gordon and it is understood their office will be built there.

Gordon Named for Central President

Mr. Gordon.tif (13372 bytes)Gordon was named for Mr. William W. Gordon, who from April 1836 to November 1842 served as the first president of the Central of Georgia Railroad.

The first depot was erected by the railroad in 1855 and it stood only a few yards from the present one.

Increase in Population

After the Railroad was built the population of the little community began to increase. In 1848 Mr. Dave Solomon built the first Grist Mill here. It was located where the Pynetree Paper Mill was built later. He sold this mill to a Mr. Calaway who later sold it to Mr. James Stevens, grandfather of the late Stevens Roy Owen. In 1910 Mr. John Hooks, negotiated the sale of this property to the Pynetree Paper Company.  By 1850 the town had grown large enough that it was necessary to build a few stores to meet the needs of the people. The first stores were built by Messrs. Jack Lavender, Eli Frasuer, Isaac Neul, James Fulton, Jack Williams and a Mr. Ware.
